Solos Outside Of The Trumpet Realm

I'm planning a recital for this next fall semester. I'd like to perform one piece outside of the trumpet repetoire. Does anyone have any suggestions on non-trumpet pieces for me to consider in my program? Thanks!

Outside of the trumpet repertoire? As in like an arrangement or a transcription? The Girl with the Flaxen Hair by Debussy? If you can give some idea of standard then I'll probably be able to suggest a little more. What else are you playing?

I really like the Seite Canciones Populares by Manuel de Falla (mezzo-soprano version lies really easily for trumpet and/or flugel, plus you can improvise some virtuostic stuff in there).

On a recital last year, I did "Beim Schlafengehen" from Strauss' Four Last Songs, and it worked well. Song transcriptions are a good source of other rep, as are pieces for violin, oboe, horn, etc. (Schumann's Drei Romanzen comes to mind).

Alternatively, you could find a song you like and make a creative transcription of it. See for example, Brad Meldhau's treatment of the Radiohead song "Paranoid Android" on his album Largo.

How about the Mozart Alleluia? It's beautiful vocal music and instantly recognizable to those in the audience who might not be musicians.

I second this suggestion. I've played this for the last several years at Easter and everyone always enjoys it. It's simple technically, goes together with the accompanist on the first time through, and is very flashy. The version that I have is for soprano and piano (high voice), and has the High C at the end.

The other good thing about this is getting to listen to some really great soprano's when you are considering how to interpret it.

Great suggestion Manny!

I like practicing non-traditional trumpet music... like a Mozart Oboe Concerto or Bach Violin Sonata. Dave Cooper's book on the Bach Cello Suites is also excellent.

Best,

Trent,

Nice suggestion! I have been listening to the Bach Cello Suites in my car for quite some time now. I have a set of disks by Anner Bylsma. Wow! What a treat to hear his interpretation of these. I think I'll get a copy of the David Cooper book (there’s another book by Michael Ewald that has one “dance” from the Cello Suites that I really enjoyed working up).

Brad,

If you search out the David Cooper book, I can highly recommend the Bartok 44 Violin Duets, also arranged by David Cooper. I heard some of these at the ITG New Works concert in Denver in 2004. With very limited funds, this was one of the two things that I purchased while I was there.

Here is a link to the Bartok Book

I have had success venturing into the vocal art-song repertoire (non-opera), piano repertoire and jazz rep.

Some music that I have played in recitals include works by Gabriel Faure (Les Berceaux, Apres un Reve, Les Rose de Ispahan), Aaron Copland (Vocalise, and "At the River" from Old American Songs), Claude Debussy ("Little Shepherd" and "Golliwogs Cakewalk from The Childrens Corner) and Duke Ellington (Come Sunday).

All of these were just taken from the actual vocal parts, with the exception of the Debussy, which I transcribed for piccolo trpt.

Jens Lindemann and Bob Sullivan have done lots of transcriptions on their solo records, including really great versions of Three Preludes by George Gershwin.

Also check out a record by Ray Mase called Vocalise. It's a recording comprised of all vocal transcriptions. The cd is available from Summit Records (DCD-185).

Amanda Pepping published a collection of Spanish Songs for trumpet and piano by composers such as De Falla, Albeniz and Granados. The collection is available at Hickman Music Editions and she recorded them on her first record, Amanda, which is also available from Summit records (DCD-433)

I can suggest something I have played for my final recital at the Royal Northern College of Music. Jean - Francois D'Andrieu (or Dandrieu, both spelling are used) Sonata a tre No 1 in A minor. There is an arrangement for Piano/Organ and Trumpet by Jean Thilde (Collection Maurice Andre), but the Thilds's realisation of the B.C. is not great. What I have done actually was to keep parts pf the trio as they are, just replacing the first violin with the trumpet (you play it in the pic. I did on F trumpet but D trumpet is OK too). What do you think, Manny?
