Strauss Four Last Songs

This is the time of year I like to listen to these songs full blast on the stereo. I have five different recordings of them. My favorite is Jessye Norman with Leipzig and Masur.

Does anyone else like these songs? If you do, do you have a favorite recording?

I knew there was a reason I liked you, Alex!

The Strauss Four last Songs are a set of songs that keeps on giving. When you are young, the challenge of the phrase and the beauty of the orchestration are inescapable. As you get older the text becomes more meaningful as you start to review the half of the life you've led and muse on the life to come.

I got to hear Jessye with the Berlin Phil in Chicago back in the 80's. I even met her afterward and told her that we had worked together in Minneapolis and also in Seattle. What a gentle, sweet lady!

Yeah, wonderful, haunting stuff, that.

Alex,

Thanks for the tip!

Though I must confess I opted for Ljuba Welitsch, of whom I had not heard. I read she was renowned during the mid-40's to 50's, died young, and is Bulgarian. The recording is monophonic I gather.

I'm a sucker for old stuff. Toss in the rest, and my bacon was fried.

I look forward to listening.

Richard

I have 2 recordings i forget the singers, one is Karajan in Berlin and the other is Previn in Vienna I think I like Karajan better.

Oh Richard, if you like this work and not familiar with the Norman/Masur recording, you MUST pick it up. It is just incredible music. You're in for a treat.

Arleen Auger and Renee Fleming are good ones too, but Jessye's will sweep you away.

Yeah ML, this is one of those special works that never grows weary to the ears or the soul.

Re: Strauss Four Last Songs

They are among my all time favorite works - I was listening to them last night at full blast, no doubt to my neighbor's chagrin. If I ever get tired of these, life will have lost all meaning! This weekend Beim Schlafengehen is striking closest to my heart - no doubt that will change later in the week.

I like Jessye's recording very much - it is beautiful, but I am also totally in love with the Elizabeth Schwarzkopf recordings, particularly for interpretation. Renee's is also incredibly beautiful.

Who is playing on the Renee Fleming recording done on RCA? I found it on iTunes, but can't seem to figure out who the orchestra is.

Mine is with Christoph Eschenbach and the Houston Symphony.

Deborah Voight with New York/Masur and Barbara Hendricks with Philly/Swallisch are both worth checking out
