| Yes, I played, but sight reading, as fun after the rehearsal... That's a very nice work from Strawinsky. Notice that there is any second trumpet, but actually two independent voices. I would say the original from the trumpet in A was for cornet, and the C for trumpet, but I don't know 100%. If you play it, try to play the two parts, that's worth! Trombonists usually play louder than the flute player may wish It's anyway dificult, sometimes just pay attention... Have fun! |

It requires a suppleness of articulation and musical flexibility that stretch some player's capabilities. Balance is a problem, but it can be accomplished. We played the work at the Marlboro Festival many times. Marcel Moyse, who was the flautist at the premiere performance of the work, complimented the trumpets on how much easier we made it sound I love this work, we used the horns it called for. C and Bb/A trumpets. Wilmer | |

![]() ![]() ![]() | We played the Octet with conductors, Marcel Moyse and Leon Kirchner, and we did a few on our own. It's a toss-up........I like the times we had conductors Wilmer |

![]() | Wilmer, Did the original parts labeled C and Bb/A? I've played the "second" part a few times, but it has always been labeled A. Frank Battisti wrote out the part for B-flat, which is helpful, but I've never seen a part switching between both keys. If it weren't for those gnarly licks in the second movement, I think the whole thing might work with two C trumpets. -Jimi |

![]() ![]() | I played in undergrad and am performing it again next year on a faculty recital. I love the piece and both trumpet parts are very fun to play. -T |

| New Friend | Hey Jimi, FYI, that Bb part at NEC was written by me, not by Frank. The licks in the second mvt don't work on C because of low range issues. Leave it to Stravinsky to write a piece that has only 6 low E's in it, requiring a different trumpet. Grr!! The Octet was the piece of music that I heard that made me want to be a classical musician. I was listening to the NY classical station and it came on. This was probably 17 year ago. I thought it was the coolest thing that I'd ever heard. It was years later that I got to play it and remembered hearing it years before. The piece is wonderful, and if I'm not mistaken was originally written for unconducted ensemble, which is ironic because it is one of the staples in young conducting literature. |
