| Stupid pic question Really basic question... If I set my chops to play an A =440 Hz note on my "regular" trumpet and play the note on a pic trumpet instead, will the note be at 440 Hz or an octave above? |

| Re: Stupid pic question how do you know you are A440 and not 441? THe same pitch; A440 will feel very different on a picc than the Bb because of the difference of resistance in the two instruments. This difference also effects how you set your chops to produce that pitch. If the real question is; "Will the picc let me play and octave higher than I can on a Bb"? The answer is no. The picc doesn't give me any notes I can't play on a Bb; the high notes are just a little easier to center on a picc. |

| Fortissimo User | Re: Stupid pic question 440 is 440. 441 is 441. If you set for 440 and get a 441 then you have an intonation issue (albeit a very minor one). You are correct that a picc doesn't allow you to magically play an octave higher than you would on a normal Bb (assuming the picc is also Bb). |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Stupid pic question If you set your chops for A=440 on the big trumpet, maybe nothing comes out at all on the picc. If you approach the picc as if it is a big trumpet it will punish you. Comparing the piccolo trumpet to a normal Bb trumpet is like comparing a trumpet and a trombone - with the exception that hardly any of us use trombone mouthpieces on our trumpets. In any case, the pitch that you buzz into the horn is what comes out the front regardless if it is a tuba, trombone, Bb trumpet or picc. I would be interested to know how to set my chops for A=440. I generally negotiate with my trumpets tuning slide for that...................(just kidding) Merry Christmas!!! |
