Tchaikovsky 4 1st movement

Does anyone have any suggestions (beyond practicing, counting, listening...) on counting the middle section of movement 1? I am subbing just for one rehearsal and have trouble getting in at the right place etc when listening to recordings. I suppose it is because the strong beats the brass plays are not on the downbeats. Any tips would be apprectiated. Thanks!

Re: Tchaikovsky 4 1st movement

Practicing, counting, listening are the premiere tools for playing in an orchestra. If you don't have them mastered, you don't belong there at all. There is no shortcut to solid playing. The second trumpet player counts the bars of rest for the first.

I'm sorry I really was not looking for a shortcut. I was looking for someone with more experience to give me some advice.

Re: Tchaikovsky 4 1st movement

Find a score (try imslp.org) and listen to the piece while reading it. Do this a lot, pay attention to the parts and their entrances in rhythm. Conduct a little. You'll learn the piece much more quickly than simply listening. Actually study other entrances in relationship to yours. I've found this to be a really effective way to learn music. The only downside is that you don't tend to forget it - even after the gig!

I sat next to Leo Gomberg when I was a kid learning the routine. He would try to catch me not concentrating on the count. Gomberg always knew where he was in the music.
COUNT!!!!!!!

Yeah!!! It doesn't matter if it's dixieland or Beethoven, Count!! If you are really paying attention to the count at all times, it will eventually become second nature. You won't be able to help it. And I like the idea of reading the score while listening to a recording. (And counting, of course). 2,3,4....
