oj has a spectacular aura about
Tine Thing Helseth

Tine Thing Helseth is only 20 years old - but she has already released her first classical CD!

She performs the trumpet concertos by Haydn, Hummel, Neruda and Albinoni with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.

More on her own website: Tine Thing Helseth

Here is a video clip from the 3rd movement of Haydn :

P.S.
She also has a 10 piece group, "tenThing brassensemble":

Re: Tine Thing Helseth

Very refreshing! She brings sensitivity to the horn, yet is aggressive where needed. Looking forward to more!

I'm impressed, she's cute too! HAHA. I have a question: Overseas, how do they run music programs? It seems like in America it's "just another thing to do for extracurricular blah, blah, blah" but I've noticed that the kids I see from overseas are really, engaged. It's kewl. Maybe I should move, lol.

Very impressive, nice technique. Great sound, I think we will be seeing a lot more of her in years to come.

Re: Tine Thing Helseth

Great technique, intonation and sound. Just another "middle of the road" interpretation though, clean but inconsistent. Something for the very large pile of "great CDs" bought on a whim but only listened to once or twice.

I also am looking forward to more, with a couple more years under her belt and a bit of musical maturity some VERY special things could happen!

The orchestra trumpet players were using rotaries though!

Before any of you pile on with the comment "who in the hell is ROWUK to criticize this successful young player?", I ask you, what in this recording is better than what you hear at any recital at a college with a reasonable brass program? It is cool that she is getting coverage and opportunities, there is just nothing there for the moment that makes this CD special to me (does the world need 500 recordings of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto? Do we need recordings from everyone on the planet with decent chops even if there is little interpretive "meat"? Each of us can ask the question and will have our own unique answer!) The music business needs things to sell, that is what keeps it alive. An attractive, young, blonde, Norwegian lady with great chops is a story saleable to the masses. I am sure that Ms. Helseth will be able to offer us some "definitive" stuff in the not too distant future. I am willing to wait.

Could you say something more specific about what yout think is inconsistent in her playing?

Btw, 500 recordings of Haydn - that is a bit too much don't you think?

I have tried to keep track of the recordings from the first (Eskdale, 1938) until Helseth's recent. I've only got 98 on my list:

Recordings of J. Haydn Trumpet Concerto

If any of you have recordings that are not in my list - feel free to email me!

Re: Tine Thing Helseth

Hej OJ!
500 already existing recordings is an exaggeration of course! We would have double or triple that if EVERY player with reasonable technique and chops had the opportunity that a Ms. Helseth or an Alison Balsom do. That was kind of my point, The industry needs a story to tell and that can involve the person, gender, origin, the history, some unique factor like age or instrument and then if we get lucky, the actual performance.

Ms. Helseth with her recording actually has NOTHING new or special to offer (that has never been required to issue an album though!) and I will take the time sometime this week to listen again with the score and let you know exactly what I think is missing. I'll send you the details by PM.

Do not get me wrong, I am not trashing Tine. She is a fine young player that if she can take the pressure, will go places. I am just not so excited about recordings dumped on the market - especially of standard repertory when there is nothing special offered. The marketing hype often will destroy the player!

Had this recording been previously unreleased contemporary Norwegian trumpet music, it would be a completely different story! Marketing people find this harder to sell however!

..and we would find it hard to by

One of Tine's teachers just released a CD of that kind:

Nordic Trumpet Concertos -Ole Edvard Antonsen

I'm afraid it won't sell as much as Tine's CD. (She is a top seller here in Norway now)

I also think that if she had released such a CD, that would not have been such a wise thing to do. (Probably not possible either)

By first going for the (very tiny) standard trumpet repertoir, she is able to establish herself as a classical soloist. (She already are scheduled for several concerts in Germany with Haydn and Hummel).

I don't think orchestras would invite her (or Alison Balsom for that matter) as a soloist, based on a CD with contemporary music. (A sad fact).

Makes me proud of my Danish heritage. (Mother's side.) the Danes ruled Norway for 400 years.

Thanks for the post. I'll keep track of her and it is good to get a review of Ole's work. I'll buy the Norwegian CD you provide information about.

Information like this is worth trolling about on this site.
