Re: Tomasi Concerto

I've been working on this concerto for about 5 months now, on and off. I find that I'm learning so much about my playing through learning the work. The best advise I can give is to not try to perform it too quickly. I tried to get it ready for an audition in about 2 months, and completely fell flat on my face...

The good news is that the experience has taught me the difference between thinking I know a piece, and actually knowing it. I'm hoping it'll be ready sometime next January...

Re: Tomasi Concerto

I played the Tomasi years ago for a college Jr. recital. I had listened to recordings of it for years and I was scared to death of it. When my teacher assigned it to me, I thought "what the heck am I getting myself into?" But to be perfectly honest, I believe it turned out to be one of my best growing experiences all-around. Taking it nice and slow and before I knew it, I was performing it. it taught me that anything is possible if you have the right motivation.

Re: Tomasi Concerto

That's a good summation, Phil, of what working on that piece brings.

By my senior recital, I was not able to do it enough justice to put it on my program, but I lived with that thing for months my senior year. It's really a beautiful piece.

Taking it slow at first and getting every note in your ear is key. Heck, I guess you could say that about just about any piece but it seems especially fitting for the Tomasi.

Re: Tomasi Concerto

I've never played it. It was on the road map, but I never got to it. Once I was out of music school, the demand for it in my world dropped to about zero. The Bozza, Arutunian and Fitzgerald seemed to get more mileage.

Re: Tomasi Concerto

This piece is unique compared to any other trumpet concerto out there. I would suggest that you make sure to play it in a light enough style. It's nowhere near as "aggressive" as the Arutunian concerto, and will absolutely wear you out if you play it too heavily. I would say Sergei Nakariakov does the best recording of this piece. Good luck!
