ltg_trumpet has a spectacular aura about
tomasi question

Im planning on performing the Tomasi Trumpet Concerto, and my question, before i purchase it, is whether or not the peice is for trumpet in C or Bb, im purchasing it from JW pepper and unfortunately it doesnt specify, Ive watched several videos of it being performed on C, so im a bit weary of that, however, I love this peice, and if i need to rent out a C trumpet, i would most definately do so... any information would be most apreciated, thanks

Re: tomasi question

Most modern/contemporary french music for trumpet is written for C trumpet which is the case with Tomasi concerto. There may be some publishers who already provide the trumpet part in B flat as well, but I have never seen one. So most probably you will have to transpose or transcribe it yourself. Or get a C trumpet. It is rather brave to play the piece on B flat.

Re: tomasi question

It's been done on Bb but I wouldn't recommend it! One of my former teachers did it on Bb in the André competition many years ago - this raised a few eyebrows amongst the crowd!

I think Sergei Nakariakov recorded it on the Bb, and maybe Wynton did too on his recording (anyone know?). Nick's right, the Tomasi was written for the C - do it on the C if you can get hold of one.

Best of luck!

Re: tomasi question

Few years ago, a trumpeter from my trumpet class at the RNCM did it on B flat for the final examination. It went OK, but I wouldn't do that.

Re: tomasi question

There are other solos out there that are more fun on the Bb. The Tomasi deserves the lightness and "creamyness" of sound that a good C has.

Hindemith Sonata is one of them. Hansen Sonata is another one. These just popped in my mind. You can find plenty more.

Re: tomasi question

One should be quite comfortable on the C trumpet before trying to play this piece. If you haven't been playing C consistently beforehand, it will be even more difficult.

Re: tomasi question

The Tomasi conerto is extremely tough, every recording makes it sound eay but it sure isn't. One of my teachers once told " Make sure you know what you're doing before you play the Tomasi"
