Trumpeter's Lullaby

I was asked to play this piece for a community band. I went to a rehearsal and the conductor took it in two. I played it and everything was fine. I'm sure we won't do again until the performance.

Here is the question:

It doesn't make sense to me to do it in two. It feels more like a lullaby in four. What am I missing? Did anyone here know Leroy or know what he was thinking when he wrote it. I know the story about why he wrote the piece. I'm wondering, why in two?

I think my copy of Trumpeter's Lullaby is written in cut time, but I don't think that helps

That would effectively put it into two, but,,because it was my solo on two occasions, I played it in 4/4, which forced the conductor and the band to follow suit. It worked well after a strident conversation with the two conductors. I have no concept of what Leroy Anderson had in mind when he wrote it.

I wish that I had sounded that clean and precise in my two performances of this great number, but when I did these I had been away from the horns for over 45 years, just back for a couple of years, and was easily old enough to have been Wyntons father.

Re: Trumpeter's Lullaby

I have played it too many times to count or remember. Always in four.
I'm alwayse up for learning something new so I'll play it in two this time and try to give it
Wynton's lift and energy.

Re: Trumpeter's Lullaby

Does it matter that much how many beats are conducted? I wonder if you could tell the difference blindfolded if hearing the band playing while conducted in 2 or 4? (not a challenge, just curious). Seems like it would just be more tiring in 4, flapping the arms about quickly.
