Question Try out pieces for college?

Hi I'm going to try out at Jack state, UAB, and UNA, I'm looking for a three movement trumpet solo I've already looked at haydn's concerto and I'm looking for my other options.

Re: Try out pieces for college?

Are you looking for another three movement piece? Specifically a concerto? Do you think the Haydn is too hard, too easy or just right for your playing level? Do you need etudes, excerpts or other solo works?

Other concerti:
Hummel
Arutunian
Neruda
Gregson

Sonatas:
Hindemith
Kennen
Pilss
Antheil
Ewazen

Solo pieces:
Enesco -- Legende
Ketting -- Intrada
Bloch -- Proclamation
Goedicke -- Concert Etude
Ropartz -- Andante et Allegro
Turrin -- Caprice
Turrin -- Intrada

If you are more specific, I can narrow that list and possibly suggest other pieces.

In that case, any of the concerti except the Arutunian (one movement, however has contrasting sections and is of appropriate length, therefore would probably fly anyway) and any of the sonatas (including the Stevens, mea culpa) except the Antheil (4 movements).

The Haydn's always risky - it's one of those pieces that everyone knows and thus everyone has a specific belief of how it 'must' be played. I'd avoid it if at all possible. The Neruda would be an excellent selection.

Re: Try out pieces for college?

The Arutunian is a great solo/audition piece. It requires pretty much everything that a trumpet player needs. Wind control, soft playing, loud playing, double tonguing, range, technique, emotion, musicality, etc. I would stay away from the Hummel since it tends to lack emotion -- you just put yourself out there like a fanfare trumpet. If you definitely need a sonata, my favorite is Kennan. It's not as overly played as some, but it can definitely highlight a lot of different aspects of your playing. Good luck!
