| What mouthpiece did Bud actually play on? There seems to be some disagreement about what mouthpiece Bud Herseth played on after his nerve damage. I've heard 1, 1X, 1C, and 1B. Which one is it? Did he play on all of these at different times? |

![]() | Re: What mouthpiece did Bud actually play on? A few years ago Bud came to NEC for a "Brass Bash." On the gala concert, he played the Fanfae for St. Edmundsbury with Charlie Schlueter and Peter Chapman. I went to the rehearsal and Bud spent the first part of the it talking to Charlie and Peter about the different mouthpieces he had brought. This was especially ironic given that Charlie was playing his Raja Samahdi, which has no mouthpiece. When Bud finally finished talking about mouthpieces and decided on one to use, the rehearsal was half over. -Jimi |

| Re: What mouthpiece did Bud actually play on? There is a picture in the September 94 Smithsonian of one of his moughpieces that shows a 1 rim and a custom underpart. What any individual player uses really doesn't matter, as long as the product that comes out of the bell is what you want. The audience or conductor doesn't hear 3c, 1X or 1.5B. So use what works best for you not because Bud used it. |

| Pianissimo User | Re: What mouthpiece did Bud actually play on? Bud used several different things... I do know he played on a 7c in the early days before the car wreck. Since then he played on larger equiptment, I know theres a Laskey model he was fond of 80b or something? I think he played on various versions of the 1 (1.5,1.25,C,X) for awhile... and then eventually later on lots of things... He said he always used to best tools for the job.... for instance, one time he recorded himself play the posthorn solo on a few different combinations of horn/mpc/etc. and ended up chosing the old Bundy Cornet because he liked that sound the best. Ultimately, Bud sounded the way he did not because of equiptment, but because of his sound concept... the switches of equiptment were to it easier to obtain the goal already conceptualized in his head. |
