Why C Trumpet?

Manny,

I was practicing today and having fun with some orchestral excerpts when a thought came to me. Why is the C trumpet the most promanantly used horn in the orchestral world? I suspect it has much to do with transposition, but i'm not sure. Any feedback on this would be great.

Thanks

It doesn't have anything to do with transposition. It has to do with an instrument that makes the upper register a bit more accessible and has a nice capacity for blending in lighter contexts light a lot of French music, just as one example. Even Mahler indicated for its specific use in his later symphonies (auf kleinem piston). The "small trumpet" Mahler referred to was the "new" C trumpet.

The thing I don't really get is why we still are reading parts written for instruments that haven't been around for 100 years....... like the big F trumpet or big D trumpet. Having clean and modern looking parts for
b flat (and C) would go a long way towards making orchestral brass playing more accessible to younger players who might be having a tough enough time playing as it is without the complication of transposition.

Transposition is musical math for the brain and a good introduction for most young trumpeters to understand different clefs. I hope Parts are never changed and retain their original appearance. The last thing trumpeters need is to use less intellect in their studies. The musical math of transposition, theory, ear training, etc. are like vitamins for us.

Intellect in the practice room or studio gives you the tools to use your heart on stage.

Hey, Chris...

I think that the C trumpet needs a very solid ear. These days they're playing them in High School but I haven't heard of any kids that's dropped the Bb in favor of the C. So, if a kid has a lot of orchestral playing to do and has a good ear, late high school would probably be fine.

I didn't get one until my third year at Juilliard. I've never asked Wilmer when he got one nor Ed but you might poll them as well,

See you around!
