Question Youngest Principal Trumpet?

Tom Hooten's Birthday thread (31 years old / Atlanta Symphony) got me thinking. Who is the youngest principal trumpet player working in a Major Symphony today?

Phil Smith was young when he started.

Not sure about today, but didn't Rolf Smedvig play principal in Boston when he was 18?

Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

Raymond Crisara I believe was 18 or 19 when he got the job at the Met. Opera back in the late 30's. As for today isn't Chris Martin in his late 20's?

Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

Yeah I believe Chris Martin was 28 when he got the Chicago job...so that'd put him about the same age as Tom.
In my mind, sitting principal in Chicago at 28 with today's level of competition is definately one of the biggest achievements ever for an orchestral trumpet player. Hats off to Chris

Re: Youngest Principal Trumpet?

Wilmer...you might be able to help me on this one.....
I believe that Sidney Baker got the job with the Chicago Symphony when he was about 19 years old. Baker played with the CSO before Herseth. He played with the CSO for a short time and then was drafted to fight in WWII.
If there is anybody out there from Music and Art HS, you might have some info on Baker.
