Handoval will become famous soon enough
Re: aebersolds

Hi, I'm playing jazz for ages and I had to find my own way, but did listen a lot to the pro's (Miles, Chet, Dizzy, etc.). What I've learned is that you must not get too much involved in theoretical stuff, it will get in the way and block your creative mind in doing what you want to do. Master your instrument and let your mind do the rest, your imagination will fly. Improvising with the help of Aebersold CD's is very helpful, I did use it a lot and still am using it to hear the chord changes on tunes I have to play when I'm featured as a guest with small combo's. Remember what the great Miles once said: There are no wrong notes, there's only wrong timing. So master your instrument and listen to your mind to produce the notes you want. If you loose track Dizzy once told me to play a lot of notes very fast because there will always be a few good once between them. Main thing is to listen to what you feel and translate that to your horn.

kind regards, Han.

Re: aebersolds

Another great thing about Maiden Voyage is these are actual tunes played and recorded by some great players. So you can go to iTunes and download Autumn Leaves (or any other tune in the book) and hear how Miles Davis and Harry James (and many others) played their solos.

Cheers!

Re: aebersolds

Hi goman,
To bad about the rip off thing.
I'm not sure if you can but if you go to amazon.com and type in aebersold, you can find bunches of aebersold "used". I've bought many this way. I'd rather spend $8.00 USD than 25.00 any day. If you do order a used version of an aebersold play along, be sure is says the CD is included. If you are brave, aebersold has a play along called Monk. Yep its hard but wow what an education in the chordal structures and timing of T. Monk!!
Good Luck

Re: aebersolds

As a former sax player I swore by these books and had over 50 of them. They're great for learning the 'architecture' of songs, but pretty hazardous to practice too intsensely with, as all they teach you is how to play those songs along with Jamie. The first time I went out and tried a few new songs with the house band at a local jam session, I got completely lost as the pianist was using his own chord shapes and none of it sounded like I'd rehearsed with Aebersold. There is NO substitute for practicing with other players, better still an 'accompanist'

Re: aebersolds

Hi, I'm actually a pianist but interested in learning trumpet...

Living in Hawaii, there weren't many playing opportunities for me when I was learning, so I used Aebersolds a lot. While they helped me a lot with song form and improvisation, but I agree with Julius above that getting too used to the Aebersold recording can end up confusing you when it comes to playing with real players.

That said, Aebersolds are a great tool. I'd recommend the Killer Joe, Maiden Voyage, or What's New Aebersolds. If you want a challenge, find the Wayne Shorter, Monk, etc.

Re: aebersolds

hey, yes actually I totally agree that ...they are great. No problem there. In fact if you follow the tutorials, and read 'between the lines' of the books you can progress in your own development at quite a rate. But to paraphrase Parker: "learn everything you can, then forget it and start playing"
