![]() ![]() | Re: aebersolds Hi igt, I highly recommend them. There are over 100 play alongs and some are just bloody difficult as all hell. For starting out, I would recommend The Magic of Miles (vol. 50 I think). Check out the web site to get more info on the difficulty level. Also, you can sometimes get these play alongs on ebay for cheap (just make sure the book has the CD too!). |

![]() | Re: aebersolds If your local music store carries a selection, look through them and pick the ones that look doable to you. Also hal leanard has some jazz books with CDs. I use the Aebersolds with my students to great success.

I have several favorite volumes. But I think the more practical volumes are the foundational ones like Vol 2 (nothin' but the blues), Vol 3 (II-V progression), Vol 42 (blues in all keys), Vol 47 (rhythm changes in all keys). There are probably a few other foundational volumes, like Major and Minor, Dominant 7 workout, but I'm not as familiar with them. I probably use Vol 3 the most. | |

![]() | Re: aebersolds I've been going through Volume 54 - Maiden Voyage with my teacher. There is a Trumpet Solo supplement sold seperately written by Lennie Niehaus - played by Bobby Shew - that corresponds to each tune in Volume 54. There are two to four solos for each tune. So first I'll play the chorus, then a written solo from the supplement - followed by improvising. Playing the chorus and a written solo helps me get a feel for the tune. I highly recommend both books, you'll have a great time! Regards, Jon |

This is by far my favorite thing to do when practicing - I get to work on reading, phrasing and timing (as you said), scales, arpeggios, improvising, etc - all in one. Oh yea, I'm also learning a standard Jazz tune! I feel like I get a lot done with one 5 min Aebersold track. I've only been playing Trumpet 8 months or so (I played bass for 20 years - bass hasn't left the case since I picked up the horn), and this way of practice has helped me the most.
