| Pianissimo User | All County Jazz Audition Basically it will consist of playing a jazz tune, then soloing for it. I'll be playing Billie's Bounce by Charlie Parker. Any tips? This is my first big audition, an i'm pretty nervous. |

| Forte User | B-Sorry to take such a long time getting back. I just judged an all-county jazz audition... What we listen for on this side of the table is sound, style, and rhythmic accuracy. Follow the advice and listen to the tune. Get a sense of the style. Find a recording of Bird himself and some other recordings as well. Listen to a few other tunes; Now's The Time is another good one, as it is essentially the same chords. (If you're using the Abersold book, they are on the same page with shared changes, right?) Know your scales (we require 7 majors up here, so I usually have my students prepare up to 3# and 3b and of course C; not sure about down by you...Suffolk County, right?) and practice sight reading. Very often, those are the determining factors when it's really close between 2 candidates who performed equally well on their tune. Play well and let us know how it goes! |
