Best Big Band/ Lead Trpt Combination

OK,

Because we are on the topic of lead trumpet sounds let's see what everyone thinks about the lead trumpets and there affiliation with name Big Bands.

Example:

For my money, Dave Stahl was the best lead trumpet Buddy Rich ever carried. (Chuck Schmidt a close second), but Dave Stahl was a bad choice as lead trumpet (as far as style) that Base used. Lin biviano did more for me with Basie just because of the excitement he brought to the table.

Here we go:

Buddy Rich - Dave Stahl
Woody Herman - Roger Ingram ( Bill Chase close second )
Stan Kenton - Dalton Smith ( John Harner close second )
Maynard - Lin Biviano
Basie - Al Porcino, Snooky Young tie
Ray Charles - Byron Stripling
Bob Florence - George Graham
Skitch Henderson - Doc Severinson
Terry Gibb - Buddy Childers ( louis Valizon, 2nd )
Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis - Jon Faddis
Capp/Pierce Juggarnaut - Bobby Shew
Bill Holman - Buddy Childers
Tokisho - Bobby Shew

Ok, you get the idea. Again , no wrong or right answers plus I would like to hear about more regional big bands and there hard driving lead trpt player

Well you get the idea and if you can, name the album that backs up your claim and if you disagree let's hear that too, but be ready to back it up also.

Sorry, I forgot a few,

Don Ellis - Glenn Stuart
Oliver Nelson - Bobby Bryant
Gerald Wilson - Snooky Young
Fania all-stars - Victor Paz
Chico O'Farrell - Kevin Seely, Roger Ingram

I realize that this is very unfair to all the lead trumpets that played with these bands ( some of them good friends of mine that I didn;t pick ), but it's just to see what everyone thinks, all in good fun. Sorry, Wayne

Lead Trumpet Players

Larry ... you always seem to come up with something fun! I'm only gonna pick one each, but there many others per band!

Maynard Ferguson - Chet Ferretti

Buddy Rich - Shew

Basie - Snooky

Skitch Henderson (NBC) - Doc

NBC Johnny Carson - Audino - Findley (ok I had to go with those two)

Woody Herman - Joe Rodriguez (now in SF area)

Terry Gibbs - Al Porcino

Frank Sinatra - GOZ

Severinsens Big Band - Tom DeLibero / Tony Scodwell

Wayne Newton - Wes Marshal / Kevin Lawson

Gordon Goodwind Phat Band - Wayne Bergeron

Then too I have mention Bob McCoy & Chuck Findley as lead players period!

The best marriages between a lead trumpeter and the band are really about a marriage between the lead trumpeter and the drummer. The two best drummer/lead player hook ups I've ever heard are:

Benny Bailey & Kenny Clarke with the Clarke/Boland Band
Earl Gardner & Mel Lewis with the Mel Lewis Orchestra

Hi all,

Here's a Maynard lead player that get's overlooked alot and I almost picked him. His trgic death in 1969 really put a halt to a great career.

Nat Pavone - MF Dream band late '60's

Nat Pavone

Yup ... a rock solid one!

There are so many really fine lead trumpet players over the years ..

John Madrid!!! Yes that's a name that too often gets forgotten!

Pat Metheny Group

Not Big Band per se, mais.........

Pat Metheny (Group) - Cuong Vu

who also glides in with drummer Antonio Sanchez, esp for Pat and Lyle's compositions...

Larry,

I heard Maynard last year live at the Jazz Alley in Seattle.

How would you say Patrick Hession stacks up to the other lead trumpet's that Maynard has had in the past? He seems to be a pretty hot talent.

Hi Thevor,

To tell you the truth, I don't know Pat Hession's playing all that well at this point. I'm sure I'll hear more of this guy.I'm sure he excellent if he's playing with Maynard's band.

If I was to rate any of the new lead players in Maynard's BBN days I'd have to list Scott Englebright and Roger Ingram. I would say some of the lead players deserving more attention are Greene, Pete Olstad and Steve Reid. Wayne Bergeron would be pre-BBN , I beleive.

Roger Ingram's playing has really matured from his days with MF and now his playing is in a catagory of very eleite lead trumpet players. He is, for my money, the best big band lead trumpet in his generation ( and many other's ) becasue of his superb style, intensity and the way, like Bill chase did , the got the whole band to play better when he played.
