![]() | bitches brew and induviduals alright, so we got some discussion goin about good ol miles davis. so what dya say we just get a thread goin bout him? im listenin to it right now and let me tell you, this is my first time listening and i heard it and i laughed and said to my self "i could play bitches brew better than miles" but, that led me to think, maybe thats what hes doing, hes being an induvidual, hes playin it, hes diggin it, hes turnin it slowly... roastin, its out there, hes being an induvidual, which is something we as musicians dont do much any more, someone said... "there aint nothin wrong with bein a copy cat if you copyin the right cat" and i think he was wrong, thats the quote that is bringin us down, we keep copyin and copyin and copyin and we never get any where, so what does miles do? he goes out and owns the stage, with what ever the hell he is feelin and its beautiful in an induviualistic manner, but, we have the other side of the spectrum, the routine, we like routine... i just realized what miles did, it was something that no one else did, its why i love him... his tone was "miles". when you listen to trumpet players, you hear a trumpet and its hard to differentiate between each, but, when you hear miles... you know who it is... thats mighty miles and his saxy trumpet, i think he wanted to be an induvidual in an anti-induvidualistic society. think about it, my instructor doesnt say "make your own sound" or "toot your own horn" he says "who do you wanna sound like? hmm... cliff? art? Arturo? Chris? dizzy?" but who did they want to sound like? ha... WHO CARES? ... thats what im going to do, look out world... this is what we need, people who are people, not curiculum based people. curiculum is good, but we need people who want to sound like them selves,

| Forte User | Re: bitches brew and induviduals I couldn't make it through half of your post. The writing is unreadable. I don't like Bitches Brew. It isn't my favorite Miles album by far, but I do know that no one could play the music better than Miles. Miles is all about the perfect note at the perfect time. No more, no less. You might not cack a note, but you can't play Bitches Brew better than Miles.

![]() | Re: bitches brew and induviduals To a certain degree, it is not what Miles plays. It's what he doesn't. His spaces speak. You rarely see someone walking down the street whistling bop ( with the exception of Ron Macrobie). I have put on a number of albums for non-Jazz listeners. The haunting tones of Miles rate with everyone. They can hear the raw emotion oozing out. Put on Dizzy playing bop and a lot of people just don't get it.

![]() | Re: bitches brew and induviduals There is a lot going on in Bitches Brew. The rythmn section is very busy at times, and there are a profusion of voices, if you'll pardon the usage. Miles does what he did throughout his career, finding new and different means of expression. That said, a couple of personal opinions: First, I think a lot of people judge this album out of context - that is, they forget that Bitches Brew was cutting-edge stuff when it was released. The fusion movement was in its infancy, and Miles was at the forefront as usual. Second, I prefer "Miles Smiles", but then I'm an old fart. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: bitches brew and induviduals So go ahead and toot your own horn. But if you don't listen to others, how are you going to conjure up a sound to model? No artist lives in a vacuum and Miles was listening - to everyone and anyone who had something to say musically -jazz-wize. It has been said of Monk that he never played a note he didn't intend to play. Miles subscribed to that school, IMO. v |

![]() | Re: bitches brew and induviduals ha, sorry about that messed up format. it was a long day and my brain was fried, and i was listen to that. and yea, we need to listen to others, but we need to claim our own individuality. i like to transcribe solos, but, id like to learn to be more of an individual. however, being an individual wont get you into a college, theyd say, "i dont know what instrument youre tryin to play, but we have you down for trumpet" so, we really just have to find a balance

| Forte User | Re: bitches brew and induviduals LTG, Your thought process looks quite chaotic to me. I maybe wrong. But that's the general impression that your writing creates. If I am right, solve first this before becoming better than Miles. Best Wishes.

![]() | Re: bitches brew and induviduals "best wishes" wow trumpet nick thank you for that valuable input... it really made me better, recently i over came my Disorder and am doing alot better at trumpet... really thank you, it changed my life... ha... i dont know if you woke up and some one had shat in your wheaties or maybe you just couldnt hit that C, but you know, maybe you could actually try saying something worth while next time... on this message board Ive valued many of your ideas, however, now i dont even know if i should. if you think that the fact that i may be a little scatter brained makes me less of a trumpet player, than maybe i shouldn't have listened to a one of those 1,834 posts...
