Blue Mitchell

Man oh man, have I recently discovered some good stuff... Never really listened to Blue Mitchell much, but I have a Blue Note collection on which he does a tune called "Good Humour Man". Wonderful stuff. I might have posted about this before, but I don't care. I have a new favorite!

Absolutely, man. What a sound. He's just so laid back and he has a very unique and beautiful sound. He is by far one of my favorite trumpet players.

Re: Blue Mitchell

Blue is absolutely my favorite. You should check out some of the Horace Silver stuff with Blue on it, particularly a live CD called Doin' the Thing.

"The Thing to Do" (1964) Blue note, is my favorite Blue Mitchell album. All of the stuff with Horace Silver is great too, esp Horace-Scope (1960)
Doin' the Thing (At the Village Vanguard) (1961), that RK mentioned.

great player.

Re: Blue Mitchell

I think Blue Mitchell is about one of the best players to transcribe. His solos are really valuable to apiring improvisers. Most of his solos are eighth-note based, in a reasonable and playable range, and filled to the brim with great blues and bebop lines that make perfect sense over the changes. There's virtually no play-high-and-wiggle-the-fingers moments or indefinate pitches, just good jazz.

Yeah, that's what's drawing me to his playing. Just good solid melodic lines within the capable realm of many decent trumpet players interested in transcription. He's my next target.

I agree with all of the above! Just discovered him recently and have listened to great albums on Rhapsody and Yahoo music services. Real easy to listen to and get ideas from.

The thing about Blue Mitchell that always attracted me was his beautiful sounded. Nice and warm but real present and brilliant. I bet his sound really projected out front.
