Chet Baker Live!

Well, almost. Enjoyed hearing one of our local University Profs give a concert entirely of Chet Baker transcriptions tonight. Accompanied by a fabulous Harry Pickens on piano (who can do anything, quote anything, and play with anybody). Tunes from '54-'88. Stella...Autumn in NY...Tangerine...All Blues... Well You Needn't...On the Street...

The entire track from each recording was played verbatum (by at least the trumpet--flugel in tonight's case). And all from memory. What a neat trick! No improvising tonight, but in it's own way, it worked really well. BTW, how often did Chet play flugel?

*EDIT! This is something you must see. It's a 15 minute video of Chet (interview format with some playing) in Holland, 1987, a few months before his death. He had such a hard life and seems like a very nice guy. This kind of footage is rare. Great for youtube. JC YouTube - Hoop (Atlantis)

Chet played flugel off and on throughout his career I believe.
I don't know if I would go see a concert of transcriptions.

The playing was incredible. There was a lot of magic in the relationship between the horn and the piano. I'd go hear it again.

Re: Chet Baker Live!

Wasn't the point of the concert "educational", John? Therefore...instead of students/people sitting around listening to recordings...this prof chose to play live, using transcriptions of the artist he was showcasing.

I think I understand Brekelefuw's point...but you have to consider the context in which the concert was given.

Thanks for the info, John.

Re: Chet Baker Live!

Chet is one of my favorites, especially his work with gerry mulligan and Stan Getz.He had great tone with practically no vibrato in it.To bad he had to follow the drug addictive habits of the geats in his era.He could barely read music but could play anything in any key with just a few notes given to him.Getz was amazed by this.I did a bunch of his tunes off his recordings(transcriptions).Buy the way,he played all those unforgetable solos hardly ever playing above a Bb above the staff.I would have loved to see your professor in concert.

whats wrong with playing transcriptions? I used to go to a Sunday jam session in Boston and call tunes that I memorized Clifford Brown solos too and learned a lot from doing that. Its all part of finding your own voice my friend.
