Chris Botti

So, Chris Botti played tonight at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival and I went to see him. I had heard from a variety of places that; "he is nothing special" or "he is the Kenny G of the trumpet". After hearing him play I have come to one conclusion.

Don't let others opinions about something or someone form your own.

I might agree that from a technique standpoint he isn't anything special, I have seen and hears technical giants. But, oh the music. He produced some of the most meaningful music I have heard in a long time. Every phrase meant something, every note contibuted to the over all beauty of the sound.

I often said to people I play and hang with that I wish we could play the trumpet, like the ballad singer sings a melody. Being able to insert emotion into every note, using dynamics to prove a point.

I don't know if Chris Botti can play everything in the Arbans manual, but I can asure you one thing. The next time he is in Jacksonville, Fl I will be there.

The "Ave Maria" is worth it all by itself.......

Pete has a spectacular aura about
Re: Chris Botti

Chris is a wonderful player, and a gentleman. Not eveyone has to sound like (insert player's name) to be a credible player.

Comparing him to Kenny G: that's an insult to anyone that even owns a trumpet and can't play it. When I get too old to play the trumpet, I'll buy a soprano sax, practice circular breathing, and improve my golf handicap to a one at the same time!

I heard Chris play with Maynard at the Blue Note in NYC a few years ago and he was fantastic!

That brings my wife to tears. BTW, on the live in Boston CD, that is the first cut. We saw Chris Botti live in Syracuse (cost $5!!) and it was as memorable a concert as any I have attended. He is a consummate performer and a gentleman.

That person who "plays" the sax, has nothing to do with any of this.

Pekstrom will become famous soon enough
Re: Chris Botti

Am an avid Chris Botti fan, and have seen him perform twice. 10th row center at the Beacon Theatre. It was when he came down into the audience to play without a microphone, and without accompaniment that I realized why I am such a true fan, and most appreciative of his talent.

Re: Chris Botti

listening to Chris Botti on youtube is what got me back in the game after so many years. He has created a style all his own and yet he also is so good he can back up another performer like no other trumpet player I know. His performance on OPB a year ago was outstanding I haven't went to any of his performances yet but when he comes to town here in Portland Oregon I intend to go. And for his talent, he could go through Arbans with the best of them,it just isn't his style to have race in the upper register, I like that.

Re: Chris Botti

I think Chris Botti is ok, he acts to much like Winton Marsalis. You know, the high ego. And it seems like he does a lot of stuff for show. I would definitely not try to emulate him, for the obvious reasons. plus his sound is a little pinched, I noticed. Maybe I just have a bad recording.

Just stating facts, not trying to ruin anyone's mood.

I don't get it.

The OP didn't ask for YOUR opinion of Mr. Botti, he mentioned how much he liked the show and the music.

I also don't understand you comment about Botti and Marsalis having big egos!

Don't mistake confidence with ego.

I think I will start a sticky thread in the lounge for people to critique anyone they don't like or understand.

Re: Chris Botti

Chris Botti was part of what got me interested in playing again, also. The nuance of his playing is inspirational. I've never seen him live except on DVD, but he's playing Orlando tonight at the Hard Rock Live and I've got front row seats.
