Clark Terry

Hey

I would like to learn a bit more about Clark Terry but I have no recordings of him. Can anyone tell me a little about his sololing style? (range, phrases, extended techniques like growls, mutes or shakes) Anything will help.

OR better yet, does anyone have a good website that analyzes his personal style and techniques?

Thanks

Cheers
Eric

How's this for starters: http://www.clarkterry.com/

haha..

2ndly, Clark Terry is one of the most smoothly technical and limber players you'd ever want to listen to. Catch any of his work with a plunger mute, and you have an instant clinic on how to play with a plunger. (check his solo on the Tonight Show album, Skitch Tonight). There's cd's with him and Oscar Peterson.... the Clark Terry big band....etc..etc... You'll see the stuff on his site.

He also has at least one play along album/cd out there. I have the album version...one side is him playing the head and soloing...tremendous... and the other was all you. All solos were transcribed, so it was a great deal.
Sorry...can't remember the name of it right now...but perhaps his site will list it.

Definately one of my favs. A very gracious man, too.

A good starting place is the Ellington period. Clark and Duke are a magical pair."Such Sweet Thunder" is a prime example of their pairing.
CT has one of the most unique sounds on the trumpet/flugelhorn. I was hooked the first time I heard him.
Enjoy!

Eric, here's some more good stuff on Clark Terry. Wilmer was at this "master's workshop" in the audience and can vouch for it.

http://www.artistshousemusic.com/main.html

Once there, click on "Enter", and then "Media", then "Masterclass". Select CT's photo and click on that and it'll offer a "blow by blow" video/audio presentation as recorded at the time.

Some must have albums are: Oscar Peterson Trio + One with Clark Terry, has some great blues and mumblin’. Clark Terry with Metropole Orchestra, for the sweetest flugel you’ll ever hear and Clark Terry and The DePaul University Big Band for some great big band stuff. However anything you get your hands on, I'm sure you will enjoy.

CT and Joe Wilder were both guest performers with Terell Staffords Temple University Jazz Band the other night. Was quite a treat to see some great young artists joined by the masters.
