| Piano User | Re: clubdate? Club dates are not artistically satisfying necessarily, but can be if you concentrate on the good things about them. Like developing a knowledge of different style dance tunes, learning great standard melodies, becoming fluent with faking correct harmony parts, being able to play in tune, even when the guitar and bass are too loud, knowing how to eat a whole meal in five minutes, getting the waitresses phone number....

I think that they are good for developing skills, but in terms of expressing yourself... I have never had a wedding gig, or corporate gig where they said to play what I was interested in. It is always standards (which luckily I love to play), and requests by drunk patrons. | |

![]() | Re: clubdate? In Chicago they're called jobbing dates. Generally high in pay but low in satisfaction, though if you work for a good band with a good leader it can be fun. I don't do nearly as many as I used to (thank you, teaching!) but the ones I do now are generally fun with guys and gals I like. The other ones, I just tell them I'm busy. ![]() | Re: clubdate? It has been my fortunate experience over the last 12 years or so to find that I get to work with some of the most amazing and versatile musicians by playing jobbng dates. What is a source of frustration and amazement to me is the indifference on the part of MANY (but certainly not all...) of the guests at the parties we play. They have no clue as to how good these musicians are. They take requests and at the drop of a hat can play almost any tune correct to the style. Many of Chicago's finest musicians are languishing in the jobbing scene, but this is how to make a living. Most "steadies" don't pay all that well, unless you're in the CSO. Playing jazz gigs in smokey dives can bring mixed rewards, and they don't usually involve a lot of money. I can think of one of Chicago's oldest and best known jazz clubs which pays moderate to short bread and the guests who turn up are more than likley to just talk through the gig, even for a name act! Now, not all Chicago jobbing bands are great. I've played my share of gigs that I'd just as soon forget. However, by in large, the best jobbing bands are made of some fantastic people. Sorry, but the jobbing scene is an inspiring thing to me, in many ways. TTFN ND/&out

| Piano User | Re: clubdate? Incidentally, I will be in Chicago for a "jobbing"date February 18th. As soon as I know where I will let my Chicago TMers know. I would love go hang after the gig, as it does not end too late.

| Pianissimo User | Re: clubdate? All this is very informative to me - its a language thing I suppose. I always assumed that a club date meant a date in a club - like a jazz club or a cabaret club. In London they are called "functions" and that would cover small private wedding partys etc up tome pretty big corporate events at the smart London hotels and ballrooms - or exhibition centres. Playing with function bands was the first pro work I had - it helped to get me through college financially and was a fantastic introduction to professional life. All the best. Noel.
