Re: Conte Candoli

Isn't it amazing how this type of playing gets your foot tapping. Long melodic lines, no missed changes, rhythm and timing spot on - brilliant!
Unfortunately, he died shortly after this performance.

Re: Conte Candoli

I can't tell you how much I miss the old Johnny Carson Tonight Show with the NBC Orchestra. Doc and the other great trumpet player inspired me to choose to play the trumpet. They played such great music on that show and actually featured the band frequently. Sadly, David Letterman spends too much time with little goofy features when he could squeeze in a feature of the band. All the TV view generally get to see of the band is the lame "Will it Float" theme or some other filler.

I'm sure I'll enjoy watching the clip on You Tube.

What a great band! Kinda before my time, but I bought the Tonight Show band cds vol. 1&2. I wish they had DVDs of all the tunes the
band played on that show.

Re: Conte Candoli

Hey Greg,
I miss the old Tonight Show tool. I loved all the Carson comedy, but I used to wait for those band features! Not only was Doc killin', but the whole section was great, and led by Snooky. Doc would hold out a high F with his thumb on the first valve and conduct with his right hand!! I would make sure I wouldn't miss them coming out of commercial so I could hear the band playing for the studio audience. The guys on Leno and Letterman can play, but we don't get to hear them as much as the old show. It's a shame.

Re: Conte Candoli

Thanks for sharing that. I feel very fortunate to have seen Conte and Pete playing together at Carmelo's on Van Nuys Blvd in the early 1980s. The two of them together resulted in a great, great show. I attended a Christmas party in 2006 where Conte's widow was present. We had a nice conversation about him. It was nice to hear some stories of one of the great jazz trumpeters from someone who was close to him. It's great to see so many people on this website keeping guys like Conte alive through the sharing of his music.
