![]() | Derby markings in Pennsylvania 6-5000 Hi All, Our swing band is adding some original arrangements to our play list and the latest is the Jerry Gray arrangement of Pennsylvania 6-5000. In the second half of the chart there are numerous +, -, and 0 marks that I believe are derby marks. My understanding is that + is covered and 0 is open. What does the - mark mean? Many thanks,

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'm looking at my chart and from the change to Eb out ( measure 71) there are derby markings of + and 0. Under some of the 0's are > accent marks and under some of the +'s are legato markings. The legato marks all also have scoops or slights glisses before them. Give the +- notes their full value and accent the 0> notes. -cw-

![]() | Does the - always occur between a + and a 0? I'm thinking it may indicate a transition from + to 0.

![]() | Thanks for the replies. The - marks are always between the + and 0 marks except for sequential eighth notes (two measures before H and two measures before I). They even appear over eighth note rests after G and I. [D is the key change to Eb. E is the key change back to Bb 16 bars later, F, G, H, and I all follow in 8 bar increments with the end of the song 8 bars after I]. Logic makes me think that Dale's response of the - being a transition mark is probably correct, but logic has left me stranded before. I've seen the GM band in concert twice in the last year, and I know that they do alot of choreographed moves with the derbys, but just can't decipher what is required here. I tried to attach a scan of a representative section. Thanks again for your help!

![]() | Since the last scan seemed to work, I added another here to show the - marks over eighth note rests between the + and 0

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | It's "Stump the Trumpets" It simply means don't move until the next 0. Play the sign until that next indication...0-+ open to closed. +-0 closed to open . It is to make sure you don't do any Lunceford type hat fans. Clear Wilmer

![]() | After looking at the scans, it looks to me like the desired effect may be a "slide" to open or closed hat on the note following the -. I say this because some of the -'s are over rests. As Wilmer said, that would indicate leaving the hat in the previous position indicated, and then reversing the effect on that note. So, + - 0 would be "Duuuwwwah" (or something like that
