Don Ferrara???

Can anybody recomend a few good recordings with Don Ferrara on them?

I have only been able to find the recordings with Lee Konitz and Gerry Mulligan....

Did he release any as a leader?

Thanks,

PT

Thanks Pat

That was just what I was looking for. I'll see if I can find them.

As of late I have become very interested in the line of Tristano schooled trumpet players (and the modernist they influenced). I find they are extremely melodic bunch and not to full of pyrotechnics....

Do you know any others from that era?

Jon Eardley was another. Two of my teachers (Lee Konitz and Marc Copland) were definitely Tristano school guys. It's a very ear-oriented approach.

Re: Don Ferrara???

I am a long time fan of Don Ferrara's trumpet playing although there is very little of him. I have a cassette with him and the Lee Konitz Quintet (with Ronnie Ball, Peter Ind and Dick Scott) live at the Blue Note in Philadelphia, 1957. Two-and-a half pieces; poor sound. Don has only one solo and plays heavenly, with grace, poise and superb lines; he's never at a loss for the next note.
However, there is still unreleased material played after the "Very Cool" session he did with Lee Konitz, a trio of Sal Mosca, Peter Ind and Don Ferrara. Pianist Billy Lester told me he heard it some 35 years ago. It was great! It may be still in the vaults at Verve or Peter Ind has a copy, or both.
I phoned Don Ferrara some six or seven years ago and asked him if there was any material he recorded under his own name. He said there was none.
