Favorite Jazz Movies

What are your favorite Jazz Movies and why?
Hollywood has not made many jazz movies over the years ,but a few have been very good mostly for the music content in the movie itself. With that in mind and also for a good storyline I love the great Jazz movie Round Midnight.

here's a quote.."It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice" John Coffey my first trumpet teacher.

Bird - Clint Eastwood directed, 1988.

Good story, good sound, fairly good movie.

Re: Favorite Jazz Movies

That is a good movie. Clint is a big Jazz influence healso made the documentary called Monterey Jazz Festival and have you seen the Clint Eastwood movie The Gauntlet? it features some stratospheric trumpet playing of Jon Faddis! Or you might call it the Faddisphere!!

Re: Favorite Jazz Movies

"Mo' Better Blues" was pretty good. Terence Blanchard did on great job supplying the trumpet for Denzel Washington's character. Could have had more music in it, though.

Re: Favorite Jazz Movies

I wish I could've said "Chicago": the musical 2003, Rob Marshal, but I was disappointed; it was too sleazy.

I guess I have to go back to 1984, "Cotton Club" Francis Ford Copala. It is one I remember enjoying, I'd have to watch it again just to be sure as to why it's a good jazz movie.

What scares me is Richard Gere stars in both these movies that I thought of!

I researched "Cotton Club" and learned Gere actually played all the cornet solos in the movie, no faking it!

Re: Favorite Jazz Movies

If its counted as a Jazz film then The Blues Brothers (1980) is my favourite (probably obviously, lol) Loads of great musicians and songs in it.

Re: Favorite Jazz Movies

OK, here's another one with great music: "Honeydripper". If trumpet is your main requirement, go back to 1932 and "A Rhapsody in Black and Blue" and see what Louis could do with a peashooter. Speaking of Louis, what ever happened to the movie "What a Wonderful World" which was to have starred Forrest Whitaker as Satchmo (around 2008; haven't heard anything since)? Alternatively, go find any Lena Horne movie and enjoy it.

The one with Dexter Gordon, 'Round Midnight, because nobody's cooler than Dex.
