![]() | Flugelhorn Hi Ingrid - this is Eric Brewington from Washington DC. I LOVE your playing on trumpet and especially flugelhorn. I hear too many players playing flugel like it's a big trumpet. To my ears you do not approach the horns the same way. Can you talk about *your* approach to playing flugel and if there are certain things you think about differently when using it? also... WHEN ARE YOU COMING BACK TO DC!?!? WE MISS YOU! I'd love to get another lesson! best, Eric M. Brewington JazzBrew.com |

![]() | Re: Flugelhorn HI Eric and DC, wish I had something in the books. Will get onto it...another reason why I am streamlining my commitments these days. Anyways- the flugel...I'd be lying if I said that it didn't help me find my trumpet voice. I still remember the first time I got to play on my band teachers ax, it blew my mind! Clark once said to me, don't waste time practicing your flugel, focus on the trumpet. I still stick to that in many ways, although I often take it to sessions just to play and hear a bit differently.. Freddie blew hard through it but it never sounded ugly. There are so many approaches. Mine is more of a vocal one than anything. I don't sing in public (unless it's Barracudas with a bunch of my liberal friends! ha- I actually know Ann Wilson and was shocked to hear that the GOP used her tune at their fest!!!!) ... oops, back on track- So, the flugel becomes that extra smoky, dark sound that still speaks like mad, as long as I am playing it in tune and with energy at all volumes. It gets a bad rap because a lot of folks tend to play it in, well the opposite way. peace and off to the land of tah! IJ |
