The Growl

Does everyone know what I'm talking about? When you act like you're rolling your r's while playing. Anyway, I have never been able to roll my r's or tongue super fast, but I would like to learn how to. I would like to hear from any of the jazz pros on here. Do you really use the growl often? Is it really needed past the fun of it? I've heard JMU trumpets do it every year on the CD, and that's where I hope I'm headed, so I would appreciate some help. Thanks!

Re: The Growl

That isn't what a growl is. That is what is called flutter tonguing. You hear Wynton do that a lot these days.
Growling is when you actually growl into the horn as you play it. Listen to guys like Cootie Williams and Snooky Young and Clark Terry for growling. Concerto for Cootie has it in there. You can hear those guys in the Duke Ellington and Count Basie orchestras.

When I am soloing I lile to throw in a growl or two sometimes to add a bit of flavour. I especially like to do this when I play blueses, or with a plunger mute.

Re: The Growl

Kinda hard to describe, really, I usually do it and don't think about what I'm actually doing to produce the sound. But the best way to describe it, I suppose, is to basically place the very tip of your tongue near the roof of your mouth, play with a very intense and fast airstream, and let your tongue kinda flap against the roof of your mouth.

Re: The Growl

There is a plunger mute with flutter tongue lick in "42nd Street." It denotes nastiness.
I suppose we should add the old standard "Sugar Blues" by Clyde McCoy.

Re: The Growl

Flutter tonguing is a genetic thing, and I'm not sure if it can be learned at all. I would consult a doctor/geneticist and see what they say.

Re: The Growl

you can accomplish something similar if you mimic the act of gargling while expelling air. Not quite flutter toungue, and more like a growl without actual growling sound.
