Herb Pomeroy has left us

I just found out we lost Herb Pomeroy on August 11th and after a search I didn't find anything here. I had the chance to hear Herb a couple of times in Boston in the 80s. A fantastic player and a great guy.

BOSTON [Massachusetts] (AP) -- Jazz trumpeter Herb Pomeroy, who played with Charlie Parker, backed up Frank Sinatra, and influenced generations of musicians in four decades as a teacher at Berklee College of Music and MIT, died.

Pomeroy died at his Gloucester [Massachusetts] home on Saturday [August11, 2007] after a long struggle with cancer, his daughter said. He was 77.

Pomeroy played at times with Parker, Charlie Mariano, Stan Kenton, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins and others. In addition to Sinatra, he backed Tony Bennett and Sarah Vaughn.

Pomeroy taught like he played jazz ‹ by improvising, with no notes, no syllabus, no text books, said Larry Monroe, another former student who is now Berklee's vice president for international affairs.
Above all else, however, Pomeroy was a family man, said his daughter, Perry Pomeroy. He fashioned his career so he could always put family first.
Pomeroy was also an unwavering fan of amateur sports, particularly the Gloucester High School football team, and the local Inter-Town Baseball League.

Irving Herbert Pomeroy III was born and raised in Gloucester and began playing music as a teenager. He spent a year at Harvard before leaving to become a full-time musician.

Re: Herb Pomeroy has left us

Herb is sorely missed here and all over the world.

We're playing a concert on Tuesday to raise money for a Scholarship fund in his name. Pretty much every Boston player is going to be there, from Hal Crook, Greg Hopkins, Billy Pierce, Garzone, etc.... it should be a lot of fum.

Herb will always be one of my heroes and mentors. There's not a day I don't think of him often... especially when I start playing really crazy. He'd always tell me I don't need to say everything I've ever learned in every solo ;) He could always say the perfect line to make me really think about what the music needs.

I paid homage to him and another friend we lost in this area a last Month. He always used to play Atrain Slow and in Db. I felt like he was pushing down the buttons on that show.

Cheers,

T

Re: Herb Pomeroy has left us

Earlier I did read somewhere of his passing. But oh, the many inspiring nights listening to Herb and his big biand at the Stable! It's sad that his music didn't reach a wider audience.

Does anyone know if his arrangements were ever published? I have collected exactly one of them.
