The genetic component of muscle fiber type can not be overlooked when it comes to performance. Olympic athletes tend to be genetically blessed with large variations in fast and slow twitch fibers that perfectly suit their sport. Olympic sprinters have been shown to possess about 80% fast twitch fibers while those who excel in the marathon may have 80% slow twitch fibers.

This would seem to say that African descendants can run faster because they have more "Fast Twitch Muscles" They win the sprints.

This would seem to say the African descendants can run longer because theyu have more "Slow Twitch Muscles" They win the distance races.

Well, which is it????

Also, neither Maynard, John Faddis, Pat Hession, Alan Vizutti, Cat Anderson etc. etc. etc. are Cuban, yet they play(ed) very high.

Man, I am Cuban and it took a lesson with Trent to figure out some of the high register stuff.

Actually, there is a Cuban method. Goes something like this:

Long Tones
Maggio method

Band Rehearsal

More Long tones
Practise some poorly copied page from the Arbans book that has been handed down since the late 50's.

Play in the streets for tips for 4-5 hours

Maggio method Before Packing it in

To get the best results it is highly suggested to practise in an open field or under a Mango Tree.

Yes, the Cuban method works. Next time you have a chance to play your horn from 900am to 2am you will also notice improvements in your playing.

For many Cubans that I personally know in the island, music will be the easiest way to get out of that country. In order to get a gig outside of the country you have to play with the better bands. Practising and improving is an obsession as its the only way out of the hands of that dictatorship.

oh and the thing about the extra whatever it was in African American's legs or feet or whatever...is true...My mom's an othopedic surgeon (SP), and I remember her commenting on this as an interesting point of anatomy. I'll ask her what specifically it was and report back sometime soon here.... as I do not want to be branded "intolerant" as well.....

I once asked a Cuban musician of high repute (to remain nameless, but he is One Of The Guys Who Are The Guys) why such a small island produced so many unbelieveable trumpet players. He said it was because since they were so poor and the facilities were so bad that they were forced to practice outside. And the trumpet players were told something like the following: "See that building a kilometer away? Bounce your sound off of that!". It works evidently. Plus they have nothing else to do. My best students and the ones that have accomplished the most were not the rich suburban kids who had a ton of options, and tennis class on Monday and test prep on Tuesday and trumpet on Wednesday and drama on Thursday but rather the poor kids who had nothing else and sat in their basement every and practiced. Not saying that this is a universal thing but just what I have seen.

If it's a slur, or even a compliment (That's why blacks win sprint races) at someone's expense, it's WRONG and we ALL know it!

Have the guts to say what it is and don't hide behind the "joke" wall.

I guess I'm just a little too old and have seen this a few too many times to be fooled again.
