![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Yikes! I go to a gig, come home and read how this thread has "blossomed"... back to topic hopefully, people. I just had to point out that post as I thought it was silly and IMO inappropriate. Oscar brought up a bunch of nice points. If everyone practiced for that long (and almost all of it outside!) they'd have to be doing something right to STILL be playing (and not having "dead" chops). Back to Arturo! -T

I said what I meant, if I was hiding anything it was jealousy of cuban musicians, who have the drive to become great in their field. Since we are trying not to offend anyone, I will no longer greet anyone I see, or address them as male or female, or celebrate any holidays, or wish anyone a happy birthday. I also never said African people win races. Don't put words in my mouth. And can you not call them black, that is offensive. | |

![]() | Understanding where you are from, I understood what you meant was a compliment from your original post. Many of the musicians I know from Cuba have found Canada an easier transition than the U.S. There are so many great Cuban trumpet players there now that everyone in Canada must assume that there is some sort of Cuban Trumpet playing Superchops pill. Ask people in Spain and they will tell you the same thing as the Canadians. The reality is that you are hearing the best players only....those good enough to travel and seek legal status elsewhere. In 1999 I played in Cuba, on a project with members of the Buena Vista Social Club, and on the way to the trip I was terrified.....I figured there would be an Arturo Sandoval in every corner. The reality is that most players are below average. They do not have books to study from, there equipment is miserable and thier mentors are either traveling or permanently out of the country. How much guidance can you have when there are no good players around you and there are no books to study from. Eventually, some great players come out of this system because of hard work and natural skill. The option for the non-productive player is to go work the fields......not a really good alternative. |

| Pianissimo User | I'm pretty sure I'm going to see Arturo in August with my director and a few friends. From what I've heard, it'll be a blast. |
