I have a gig

Last year at this time I posted that I was going to help out a local high school with their spring musical. I just received a call from the orchestra director asking me to play first book for "A Secret Garden." Of course, I will do it.

Those of you who are retired or comeback players may find volunteering for a local school district can keep you alive a little longer. It will be six weeks of rehearsal and three nights of shows. He says it is mostly strings. I will have a flugalhorn part so the school will supply the horn.

If any of you volunteer you may have to fill out forms for a back ground check. It is the sign of the times.

Sounds like a lot of fun my friend. Good luck with the background check.

No problem with the back ground check. I have been attending choir, orchestra and drama productions at this school for three years. I have friends with kids in all three activities so I support them with my attendance. It was one of the students that asked me to help last year so I did. There are about 6 adults that volunteer or are faculty members that help out. The adults keep the student focused.

I picked up my music at the school today and had to check in with the security guard entering the parking lot. Then check in for a visitor badge at the entrance. The office staff checked my visitor badge and gave me the music. Reverse the process to leave.

If I had a child in school I would be pleased with the precautions.

Schwab

Schwab or anyone else,

There is a notation in this part that is a half note with three slashes through the stem. What does this mean?

Later in the book, about page three, is the same notation but underneith it says, "Flutter Tongue."

What do we know that three slashes through the stem means?

Is this what you are talking about ? It's the symbol for string tremolo. It's often used to designate flutter tongue for wind instruments.

"Add the same symbol you would use for a string tremolo, the 3 diagonal lines thru the note stem. It's also a good idea to add the word "flutter" to avoid any confusion."

A whole note does'nt have a stem, but yea, three slashes is flutter tongue.

Re: I have a gig

Thank you for your replies. You both interpretted correctly. Yes, I should have said "half" note.

The flutter tongueing is all done on notes near a high C. I may do a fast hard shake. I'll find out what the context of the music is and hear what works.
I think it is supposed to be aggitated, storm like.

Re: I have a gig

Depending on the note and the piece, sometimes you can get away with a false-fingering trill on a tremolo. So, if the note was a high G right above the staff, trilling open to 1-2 (making sure not to hit an A) would give you a tremolo on G.

Generally speaking though, you need to do a flutter tongue. But, since I can't get my tongue to move that fast, I often times default to a jazz "growl" which is more of a guttural sound. Either way, good luck!

I am pretty sure the conductor will work with me on this. We'll try all the suggestions.
