Jazz Band

Hi, I have just joined a jazz band and I was wondering is there any "jazz" stylistic things I should learn? The jazz band I'm in ranks by seniority. Once I'm a freshman "fresh meat" I will be ranking about 4th. Do you think I should learn how to improvise? I don't want to get totally in to jazz because I'm an orchestra player. Thanks for your help.

Re: Jazz Band

I must chime in for a second. Please excuse my rudeness. It does not matter if you are an "orchestral" player. If you are joining a jazz band, you need to verse yourself in all aspects of jazz. That means delving deeply into the art. Yes, you need to learn how to improvise. There are numerous ways to accomplish that.

Now, this whole concept of "orchestral" versus "jazz" players is a bunch of bologna. You are a MUSICIAN first, then a TRUMPET player. If you desire to succeed, you must learn all styles, all forms, all arts. Even Phil Smith plays jazz, and even Wayne Bergeron has played classical selections.

Take care and keep blowin'.
Tim
