| The Jazz Workshop (Tysons Corner, VA) So what exactly is a “Jazz Workshop”? In this case, its an opportunity to gain experience actually playing jazz with other people, and to improvise. Its a chance to really dig into some tunes and solo over chord changes, learn some of the standard repertoire that all jazz musicians play, and deal with jazz as it applies to your instrument, whatever that may be. You don't have to know anything about jazz to be in this workshop, but you do have to have a minimum level of proficiency (1-2 years) on your instrument. If you do know something about jazz, and want to gain more experience playing with people, that's great also. There are different sessions for different levels, from beginning jazz musicians to more experienced players. All instruments, whether you play sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass or drums, are welcome! The maximum number of students in the class will be six. All students will have the chance to play for the entire session, and to improvise as well. (If you haven't done that before, this is a great place to start - and if you have, this is a great place to gain more experience.) The session will be led by guitarist Paul Pieper (www.paulpieper.com), a working professional musician with 15 years of experience playing jazz. We'll be playing tunes out of the "Real Book", the main source of repertoire for jazz musicians everywhere. The atmosphere is low-pressure, supportive, and above all, fun! There are several sessions each week, Tuesday nights from 6:15-8:15pm and 8:30-10:30pm, and Saturdays from 9:45am-11:45am, 12-2pm and 2:15-4:15pm. The cost is $60 per session. I look forward to working with you - just send an email to paul pieper at gmail dot com to register, or to ask any questions you may have. Thank you! |
