Jo-Ral Harmon for Flugelhorn

I recently purchased one of these mutes and wanted to pass along a little information.

Maybe my expectations were too high. I love my Jo-Ral brass harmon for my trumpet and use it for jazz a lot. When I saw that Jo-Ral was making one for the flugel, I envisioned it being absolutely 'lushious'.

However, having played on it a few times now, I've come to accept that it does not sound significantly different from a trumpet with a harmon.

The 'harmon' portion of the sound covers the openness of the flugel. It makes the flugel sound like a trumpet with a harmon.

Just thought I'd pass that along before others rush out to drop money on it.

(Other opinions are welcome, your milage may vary.)

Re: Jo-Ral Harmon for Flugelhorn

I don't see any interest in using a flugel with a mute: though the straight mute on a flugel may sound a bit different than a muted trumpet the only application I see is on tutti muted passages for chamber ensembles, brass and wind bands. I mean when the whole section have to play muted. In soloistic situation it just seems pointless...at least to me.

I tried a Jo-Ral Harmon for Flugelhorn as well and I did not like the tone as much as the sound without it.

I think a mute on a flugle is wack idea!
Why take away from the thick butter sound tha a flugle has.

Re: Jo-Ral Harmon for Flugelhorn

Maybe a trombone harmon mute might work better?

Re: Jo-Ral Harmon for Flugelhorn

I talked extensively one time with Dmitri Matheny, who was a student of Art Farmer's. He told me that Art used a trombone harmon on his flugel to great effect. Dmitri does the same thing on a couple of tunes from his beautiful "Penumbra" CD.

Sounds like a muted flugel to me!

Re: Jo-Ral Harmon for Flugelhorn

I've used a trombone harmon on flugel a number of times-I have seen it done before, and I have heard that Miles experimented with it as well. In my expierence, it doesn't sound that great without a mic, but if you close mic it, is sounds good-similar to the tpt but a different color to use-less buzz and broader. Whatever works I guess :)

Nice to do a low key gig and bring flugel and "muted trumpet" through just one horn.... the older i get, the less i want to carry!

Re: Jo-Ral Harmon for Flugelhorn

A Jo-Ral trombone bubble will fit in most flugelhorns. I guess if you were a flugelhorn player, exclusively it would be a solution.
