Kelly Rossum NEW CD - Line TM jazz fans – I’ve enjoyed my time here at TM and have on more than one occasion needed to interrupt my mouthpiece warm-up to write a brief response to a thread. Although the jazz forum is still in it’s relative infancy, I think everyone here has their own opinions and has the capability of expressing them succinctly in a brief post. So I have an offer… Yesterday was the street date of my new CD recording entitled ‘Line’ on the 612 Sides label. This is my third release as a leader and in my opinion my first true jazz record. The recording was done live in the studio with no isolation and no overdubs; in my opinion, this is how it should be. Here’s my offer: I would like to give away 15 copies of this CD to the first 15 people who PM me in response to this post. I will give you a free copy of the commercially available CD if you agree to post a 50+ word review in this thread (not very long at all). I will list your user names on a post so we all know who will be receiving the disc and also know who will be posting a review (within a week or so of receipt). Please include your mailing address so I can send you a copy of the disc, I will be mailing them out to everybody this coming Monday. There are FREE Downloads from this CD on my website – much of this music is on the fringes of jazz. If you do not like “free jazz” or modern sounding music, please do not ask to review this disc. I will hold a few separate CDs aside for any forum moderators who would like to join in the fun, in addition to the first 15 responses. Here’s the link to my website: www.krossum.com Thank you TM. Ready, set, GO…. Peace. -Kelly

Sorry for the delayed response... it's been a madhouse around here… Go ahead and post the reviews in this thread; we'll keep the search simple. For those of you outside of the USA, I haven't been able to get your discs in the mail yet - I will be sending those out this week; again, I apologize. And finally- if anyone has questions regarding the recording process, production process, compositions, or hairstylists… fire away! cool. -Kelly

I'll go first. "Line" does what a CD ought to do these days: it makes you really want to hear the group live. The tracks alternate between stop/start vamps and blazing, rough swing. The recurring "Line" theme ties the album together and really seemed to remind me of early Andrew Hill or Eric Dolphy's work on "Out to Lunch"--swinging hard, sort of Monkish, but on the "avant-garde" side. In fact, if there is a drawback to this CD. Of course, it doesn't always blaze, but the cooler tracks are just as unpredictable. I'd recommend this CD for fans of the Vandermark Five in particular. There is great craft here, and from a trumpet-playing perspective Kelly's got an attractive tone and approach real committed sense for the Lester Bowie kind of growl language that is pretty old school when it comes down to it. The only downside to this CD is not really a downside: that it is fairly intense and swings so hard, that it should really only be put on when you have some attention to give it.
