Latin Jazz Albums

Hey TM'ers can anybody out there recomend some essential latin jazz albums. I need to purchase about 10 for my library. We have some Tito Puente and some Arturo Sandoval but it pretty much ends there. I am looking for that 4 horns and latin rhythm section stuff, mambos, merengues etc. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks
Nick

Re: Latin Jazz Albums

One to check out is Brian Lynch/Eddie Palmieri's Simpatico:

The horn line includes:

Brian Lynch, trumpet
Conrad Herwig, trombone
Phil Woods, alto sax
Donald Harrsion, alto sax
Yosvany Terry, alto sax (on the dowloadable bonus tracks)
Greg Tardy, tenor sax and clarinet
Mario Rivera, bari sax

The rhythm section includes:

Eddie Palmieri, piano
Edsel Gomez, piano
Ruben Rodriguez, bass
Boris Kozlov, bass
Pedro Martinez, percussion
Robby Ameen, drums
Dafnis Prieto, drums

This CD won the 2007 Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Re: Latin Jazz Albums

The best salsa group today is probably the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. They've recorded 3 albums so far: "Un Gran Dia En El Barrio," "Across 110th Street," and "United We Swing," and all of them are incredible. A good album for a trumpet player would be Poncho Sanchez's "Cambios," which features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet. Another good one is Bobby Shew's Latin album, "Salsa Caliente."

You pretty much can't go wrong with anything by Poncho, Tito, Arturo, Cal Tjader, Eddie Palmieri, Mongo Santamaria, or any of those guys.

Re: Latin Jazz Albums

Check out the various Cubanismo releases, trumpeter Jesus Alemany's band. Also Sierra Maestra, anything by Cachao (the bassist inventor of the mambo who's still alive and well),Alfredo Rodriguez, Los Van Van, geez, there's so much. Maraca's Otra Vision. Irakere. Chucho Valdes. Gonzalo Rubacalba. Start exploring, I guarantee you'll find a ton of rewarding stuff.

Re: Latin Jazz Albums

Any of Ray Vega's cds are great, Pa'Lante, Boperation, Squeeze, Squeeze, just to name a few. If you catch him live it's a real treat, the man is just amazing! Poncho Sanchez Ultimate Latin Dance Party is a very good one too. Arturo has been mentioned, in particular I love Danzon, Latin Train, and the sound track of For Love or Country. These are all great cds and the featured instrument is the trumpet. All the best - James

I just bought some Spanish Harlem Orchestra from iTunes, it's killer. My daughters are dancing with my wife in the kitchen right now. Awesome stuff.

The Spanish Harlem Orchestra is smokin'. I just listened to a cut off of Youtube. All these groups look great. Thanks for the input.
