Lead mouthpiece Hey guys, I'm playing on a Bach 1C for classical/orchestral stuff and a Schilke 14a4a for jazz/lead work. I'm really happy with the 1C, but after a gig on the Schilke it feels like I'm falling into the Bach. Any ideas on a lead piece that would be less of a huge transition? I'm thinking about a 1E...

Thing is, orchestral playing is my main focus; and I loooove the 1C for that. I just want a good piece to play lead on in my college jazz band. I tried the 3C for lead but I didn't really like it.

You'll get a dozen guys here all with different opinions, so I'll jump in too. I play a 3B for legit work and an Allen Vizzutti Marcinkiewicz for lead. The rim feels slightly bigger than my 3 rim. It has a lot of bite and the sound could melt steel. It makes playing high and loud a lot easier. I don't feel dead after a 4 hour job blowing lead anymore.

I can't believe the responses telling you to ditch a mouthpiece you're happy with. If you're happy with the 1C, keep playing the 1C. That said, I used to play a 1C, tried both the 1E and 1D, and found them to be unplayable. I immediately bottomed out on both. Hey, either one might work for you, but they didn't feel the same to me at all. (Cue the "GR Alpha Angle" speech.) Were I still playing the 1C I'd probably look into the Curry line of mouthpieces for a lead model. Curry claims to offer shallower mouthpieces suitable for lead playing, with rims that don't deviate from the standard Bach C-style.

I use Bach 3C for legit work and a Giardinelli 7M medium cup for lead play. That combination has always worked for me. Besides, doing lead work on a medium cup instead of a shallow cup also gives a much better sound in my opinion. I've also played the Schilke 14A4a for a year, but I didn't like the sound of it and I found it hard to switch between the 3C and the 14A4a So, I would find a medium cup mouthpiece for lead work if I were you. -- Geir
