| John Thomas-Lead Trumpet, L.A., A list player!! So many great players are left off lists and John is one of the best!! His father, Don Thomas, is a marvelous Lead player from Ft. Worth and was the first call player for everything around Dallas/Ft. Worth for many years. John went to North Texas and played Lead with the 1:00. Left to play Lead with Woody Herman, settled in L.A. and has worked extensivly in the studios as well as teaching at USC. Two CD's show a small bit of John's exceptional approach to Lead Trumpet Playing= Matt Catingub Big Band featuring Mavis Rivers (Matt's Mom) "My Mommy & Me" and "I'm Getting Cement All Over You/Ewe" For anyone that's played these Catingub charts in a rehearsal band, hearing John casually nail them is a thrill! There are other recordings with John but these show off his sound and style very well. |

| WHERE'S TONY KADLECK!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!? (see my post on jazz trumpet sections...) Other than that... Dave, great post!!!! Adding this list to my already huge list of "To Gets". A week ago, I ordered the VV "Lickety Split" album from Tower. Can't wait to get it! I also ordered the Bob Florence Ltd. Edition "Serendipity 18" (replacing the one I lost). Got to see that band live a couple of years ago in Annaheim at the IAJE, with Carl Saunders doing the trumpet feature. Blown away. Sounded like a flugel, then a jazz trumpet, then lead trumpet, all in one tune, not equipment changes. Unbelievable. --Kevin |
