| Learning and transcribing solos No doubt learning and transcribing solos is a great part of learning to play jazz. I can transcribe solos, with the help of a piano, or parts just by ear, but I canīt play the solos on my horn. There are always fast parts, and even worse, high notes / medium high notes that I canīt reach. So what other options does a beginner-trumpeter (not beginner-musician) wanting to learn jazz have? I usually work through the chord changes with and without backings, and improvise. And of course, I listen to jazz (post bop). trumpeters: Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis. BTW. I have no interest in becoming a screamer. |

| Mezzo Piano User | If you are not a beginner-musician then you must know the importance of practice. If you keep at it (trumpet) then eventually things will fall into place. You can't expect to play solos by Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis as just a beginner trumpet player. Start with the nice slower solos by these artists. That way you are learning to transcribe with your horn and you can really listen to 'their' sound and apply it to different solos. It doesn't matter if you are not a beginner-musician, if you are new to the trumpet you have to approach it as if you ARE a beginner. Start from the very beginning. Eric |
