Like Aebersold, but different...

Hey, has anyone checked out a book called "Constructing Melodic Jazz Improvisation" by Brian Kane? It's a really good study on the 12 bar blues, and starts out having the student memorize a few licks, and starts them creating their own solos over the format. It comes with about 30 sample solos for the student to listen to, and a recording of the 12-bar blues in Slow, Funk, Medium, and Fast blues.

Personally, I think it's a great way to introduce students to improvisation. With my older students, I get into the blues scale and how to construct the chords (I keep forgetting I need to discuss intervals first...DOH!). With my younger students, I just encourage them to have the freedom to play what they want, sometimes helping them out by doing a little call and response/melodic & rhythmic mimicry and circle the blues scale notes in their book.

Haven't had a student long enough yet to start discussing soloing over other chord progressions, but I feel it's a really great step-by-step introduction. Any other opinions on the book or hints, tips, & suggestions how to use it?

I like the book a lot, and I'm not saying that because I played the trumpet on the album ;)

Brian's book is a nice alternative to the Aebersolds and his approach makes a ton of sense. It's a great option FWIW.
