In an area such as music and taste, where analysis is hard to do, Brekelefuw brings us these two analythical statements. Well done! I think they say something important about us as listeners! Trent Austin also has a point when saying that it depends on what group/artist you´re listening to. My personal favourite choice isn´t modern jazz either, but that may well be because I´ve heard too many bad artists. I´ve had the pleasure of hearing Esbjörn Svenssons Trio live here in Helsingborg, and that gave me one of the best memories that I´ve carried with me ever since!

![]() | Re: Me no likey new jazz . . . I think as listeners we need to be able to meet the performers at least half way. When I go to see somone play I want them to play well and do their thing even if that thing is not my thing. It is very rare that I have not enjoyed on some level a live performance. I think it helps to see music live. For example I took my wife to see Queen Latifa last year, not something I would normally choose to do. She had a hot horn section and was delivering the goods, I had a great time. Same with jazz give people a chance to play for you and give youself a chance to enjoy it, there is a lot of great music being made but no one is going to spoon feed it to you. Nick

![]() | Re: Me no likey new jazz . . . I guess it's a matter of personal taste, but I decry the lack of any attempts at melody in a lot of modern stuff. The human brain is attuned both to rhythm and melody.A lot of modern music consists of totally forgettable so-called tunes with totally forgettable lyrics. One trumpet player who, when asked what he was playing, could only answer 'notes'. This is true but tells us nothing. |

![]() | Re: Me no likey new jazz . . . Ah, yes, Wynton . . . I'm a fair bit older than he, and have never been impressed with his jazz. He should stick to playing classical. Actually, he's a perfect example of what I think is wrong with jazz today. Guys stuck playing the old stuff are what I call "taxidermists" (no offense- I love the old stuff), and most of the new guys I find are "pseudos". I wish I had more time to come up with a well-considered reply here, but I don't have the Interweeb at home- this is a library computer. I will say that I'm working on a chart-writing method which I'm going to be using, hopefully at next year's jazz festivals here in Canada. The idea is to introduce some constraints while dispensing with others. That, and I've almost got the bugs worked out of a tritonal/trimodal system that both works and is easy on the ear, if that is desired. The trick was giving the ear cues so that the resulting music comes off as organised and structured. I've found that rhythm is the best way to get the job done. |

![]() ![]() | Re: Me no likey new jazz . . . "Guys can sure play like fiends these days, but I have to say that my attention tends to wander after about five minutes. There's a sameness to all that technique and precious little originality". I think your assessment of what you're hearing is fairly correct. I hear a lot of the same old worn out Coltrane/Miles/Clifford licks a lot. I think what we are hearing are young people in the beginning of their careers. A whole lot of notes and not very much music. I really think that this "notey -ness" is a normal progression. It takes a long time to say alot with only a few notes. However, if you are talking about modern jazz as Kenny G, Rick Braun, Boney James and those of the similar ilk then again I agree with you. This in my opinion is vanilla jazz, I lean towards 100% pure beef jazz smothered with habaneros. Of course, vanilla jazz makes a lot of money and makes a lot of people happy. Its tough to argue with the success these guys have made. |

![]() ![]() | Re: Me no likey new jazz . . . Good point! Hey!! I just thought of something that might help some struggling music major with their thesis paper, a topic! Here goes: As Musical Skill Level Increases On Recorded Medium Avalible to the Public, The Number Of Sales to the Public Goes Down. AKA, "the better you are, the less you sell" That would be an interesting study. |
