Re: Me no likey new jazz . . .

I like a lot of what I am hearing, and to be honest, Wynton is small part of it. I think his Art Blakey stuff was VERY good, then he had a very successful commercial part of his life, where he still stayed attached to his roots. His support of jazz education to kids is incredible, and his most recent stuff I find very inspirational. You can easily follow his development and appreciate the fact that he is not finished yet. Wynton will never be the one tune hit artist.

I have nothing to prove by analyzing players much better than I am. If I like the stuff, I buy the CDs, if not why bother. I do not have incredible amounts of Miles Davis floating around. He was a true innovator, but my ears were more "traditional".

I used to sell high end high fi MANY years ago. There were the geeks that could philosophize for hours about the overtones necessary to reproduce the sound of grass growing. They were still arguing long after I had soaked up a Brahms Symphony with George Szell, a Swingle Singers LP and a master tape of Frank Zappa. Moral of the story: If you have something to prove, you will always have something to argue about. If you are in this for the story behind the scenes, close your mouth, open your ears and heart and take as much as you can with you. Life is too short and the gourmets generally only are happy a very small amount of the time. Real life is a mixture of the elite and ordinary. I can really get off on high school bands. Those kids often give 150% even if the end product is not state of the musical art. I go home as fulfilled as after a concert with a name brand artist.

All I know is that somehow, I am going to use the newly discovered word "analfabet" in a sentence this week!

Re: Me no likey new jazz . . .

I consistently dig Wynton and have never really understood the beating he takes for his playing in some circles. Randy Sandke is another great player who is often described as "just a swing player" and man can he play the whole horn. There is lots of good stuff going on out there.

Re: Me no likey new jazz . . .

I have been enjoying reading this post and have taken some of the names of the newer Jazz musicians mentioned whose music I haven't heard and placed them under variety of my Chet Baker Station on Pandora. (Pandora Radio - Listen to Free Internet Radio, Find New Music)

Back in the 1980's, I managed my family's record stores and I would get promotional CD’s of the new stuff coming out from the record companies and found that most of the music the industry pushed wasn't close to being the best music out there and it still isn't. I would turn my customers on to this music and had a cool clientele because of it. The music is out there.

We are lucky to live in these times. The internet allows us to search and listen to music for free to help find the music that moves us. Sites as Trumpet Master help guide a person in the right direction.

Right now, I am into the West Coast/Cool Jazz sound.
