Re: The most underated trumpet player

Without being disrespectful, I cannot agree with you, Clarence. I have seen some trumpet players who can build solos with a better melodic line and thought while playing with with better articulations. James is surely a good jazz trumpeter, but all this big heart and humility stuff sounds overrated to me. I heard for a first time his playing on the video, whose link you provided, so I am giving my opinion based only on that video clip.

Re: The most underated trumpet player

I heard James a few weeks ago with Henry Grimes. They were playing in an outdoor setting and James was killing! They did lots of Ellington,..........come to think of it, I first met James when he was playing with the Mercer Ellington band. The Brooklyn Philharmonic was doing "Queenie Pie" and "Harlem" with the Ellington band.
James is a fabulous player, and a nice guy.

Re: The most underated trumpet player

I too have to chime in about James. Great player, sweet guy.

There are many great underrated players out there, but James is right near the top in my book, along with Greg Gisbert, Jim Rotundi, Joe Magnarelli & Scott Wendholt.

Re: The most underated trumpet player

All of the players mentioned here are excellent (and, unfortunately, underrated). However, my ultimate favorite underrated jazz trumpeter would be Italian virtuoso Fabrizio Bosso. I have 2 of his albums, and both had to be specially imported (Rome After Midnight, and Trumpet Legacy, feat. Flavio Boltro, another underrated great). There are some great audio clips on his website:

Re: The most underated trumpet player

There are so many under-, over-, pro-, air-rated players on this planet that I can't even begin to start to mention them.
I don't even think that "underrated" is the correct term. That would assume that they are known but not respected. This is obviously not the case with any of these guys! They just have not received as much press as they should have - or we read the wrong newspapers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
