![]() | My Jazz Chronicle - My Recordings Hello everyone. For the many of you who don't know me, my name is Ryan, and I am a sophomore in college, working towards an undergrad in Music Education. First of all, I've created this thread for my benefit and my want... nay, NEED to learn from anyone and everyone so that I may improve. As a background of my playing, I picked up the trumpet in 5th grade and haven't put it down since. Specifically for jazz, I've been in jazz bands through middle school and high school, and I've continued to play in college. Its become an extreme love of mine over the past year or two, and as of now, I'm thinking of getting a masters in some aspect of it in a few years. Although I've played jazz for the past some years, I haven't PLAYED jazz before this year, when I started private lessons and really began to study and listen. I've transcribed various things (im told i have a great ear), I listen a lot, and do other things which i think help out. Also, after hearing so many people stress the importance of recording yourself, i went and spent about $100 on a nice mini-stereo mic, and a cheap but good mp3 player. Ive began to record myself in rehearsals, practice rooms, and concerts, so different things below will be either from that, recordings from the school. So far, its paying off! So, basically, this thread is for me to brain-suck off of anyone who's willing to listen to things I post, and give feedback, good or bad. Rip into me, tear me apart, destroy me... what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and I want to be stronger! Thanks! Ryan

![]() | Re: My Jazz Chronicle - My Recordings And here is the first recording... I hope it works! This song is called Little Red Wagon, the 3rd part to a suite written by Roy Mitchell for our jazz band this year. Its on my mic/mp3 player in a rehearsal we had today. Its not long, but i think its something fun, laid back, and a decent thing to start my chronicle. I put the head on there, and then my solo right afterward. Oh, and ignore the sudden loud thing near the end... someone next to me decided to point their bell into my mic since it was the first time ive had it in rehearsal, and it threw off the "balance." LittleRedWagonSample1.mp3 Let the learning process begin.

![]() | Re: My Jazz Chronicle - My Recordings Ciao S-Money, Man-- if what you say is true-- that you've been playing Jazz for like a year or so-- then I gotta really give it up to you. You sound wonderful! As a life-long Jazz student myself, I'd like to suggest to just keep doing what your'e doing. Be a sponge and soak up any and all influences you can-- be they past or present, well-known or local heroes -on any instrument. I see that you're from Mechanicsburg Pa. I'm originally from Pottsville-- not too far away. I remember doing a state band thing there back in my high school days. BTY- I'll be stateside in less than a month and doing a gig in Pottsville (an annual thing). Perhaps we can connect by phone or even in person in you want. Anyway, I wanted to say how much I dug what you were puttin' down on that blues. You really put your sound out there in a personal way and projected very nice ideas. Congrats and keep up the good work! Regards and Ciao for now--

![]() | Re: My Jazz Chronicle - My Recordings Here is sample number two. We had our jazz concert last night, and man, it was pretty killer. This sample is from the first tune of the Red Sketches thing by Roy Mitchell, not including the prolog (Little Red Wagon was the closing part)... Its called Red Sky. (Yes, the theme of our concert/school year was red if you couldn't guess by now) Anyway, this is the head in 5/8 coming right out of the prolog, and going into my solo. remember, the mic is by me, so ignore all the fracks... it was a long day! This was recorded by my sony mic/mp3 player. Enjoy, and comment (approval is appreciated, but suggestions are better RedSkyConcert.mp3 *Possibly soon to come: Little Red Wagon solo (from the Red Sketches suite), and Grenada Smoothie solo, both from the same concert*

Amazon.com: Sony ECM-DS70P Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone: Electronics All i do is plug this into a mp3 player that has a line in port, and the capability to power a mic with no self power, hit record, and play away.
