Need to learn riffs/licks for a solo

I am scheduled to perform a solo with a CD track at our church on the evening of August 16th. The CD track is essentially made for a vocal soloist. The song is a little long and repetitive when playing the melody on an instrument (translation…it gets boring).

I would like to learn some riffs/licks/flourishes/embellishments (choose one!) to liven up the last half of the song. This is something I have never done before, and can use some advice.

Given the new direction that our Music Minister wants me to go in, it is something that I will need to learn well for future performances. (Our Music Minister is trying to introduce our congregation to more contemporary music.) So I am not just asking for the notes for one song. Rather, I am starting a new phase of my musical education if you see what I mean.

Is there a book with CD that somebody has good experiences with that I should be working with?

Some exercises, web site or just plain old advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would suggest The SPIT Book. It contains "riffs" that you place within the melody. It covers every key and is very user friendly. The seller also gives a email for the buyer to use if there are any questions about how to use the book.

Depending on the style of the piece, adding
some trills could be a simple and nice way to
vary things . . .
