| New Method Book for Jazz Trumpet Players Just wanted to let everyone know that there is a new publication, by Rich Willey, now available. Rich is a fantastic trumpet player and teacher who has among many of his accomplishments toured with Maynard's Big Bop Nouveau playing the "jazz" chair. IMO, This book is going to be for jazz players what the Arbans is for classical players......a very complete method which places emphasis on both technical and musical development. Please check Forum: trumpetherald.com for more info on the book. I have been using a small "handbook" which Rich had published a few years ago. I have used the "handbook" exclusively for my jazz practise.....the new expanded method book makes things so much better because all exercises are written out in all the keys. The play along is also very helpfull in helping develop your personal style, which is probably the reason most of us want to be jazz players. | Re: New Method Book for Jazz Trumpet Players Sounds great, just what I've been looking for. My question is why write all of the exercises in all keys? Are they so difficult that they can't be transposed? T. Mac |

| Re: New Method Book for Jazz Trumpet Players Hi Tom: The exercises are not "difficult" at all. However if you try to play a pattern in all twelve keys without writing them down.......even the easiest patterns can become a challenge. If you think of the popular technical studies book by Clarke ,if he had only written each exercise in one key, the book would have been like ten pages long. More importantly, most players would probably not have practiced the Clarke book completely unless he wrote it all out. When I was working out of his smaller "handbook" I would normally just play the exercises in a couple of keys.....after that I would quit playing the pattern due to a combination of laziness and frustration. Writing out all the exercises is a really good idea on Rich's part. |

| Re: New Method Book for Jazz Trumpet Players I read about this book on TPIN and brought it right away and I been practicing out of it over a week now. I wich this book had been around 20years ago. Its the best thing thats happened to my playing in a long long time. Rich Wiley is to be congratulated on making a jazz impro book that has plenty for all levels of players. I'm blown away. |
