Re: New Thread #1: My top jazz tune list... thoughts?

Birdland... not a "jazz" tune... Very good to have these for different nights too, clubs you can stick to swing tunes, couple of bossa's and plenty of ballads. As for fusion tunes such as "Man In The Green Shirt" "Red Clay" etc... maybe somewhere you can blast a bit. Nobody likes whimpy double g's am I right?

I don't claim to have all these memorised yet, give me a couple of weeks though. It helps doing them in all keys too, so you don't get caught out with a singer.
For Hubbard it's 'Byrdlike'....

It's listed as "Birdlike" on Ready for Freddie (The Blue Note Van Gelder Edition) but I believe you're right... I don't really care, it's pronounced the same and if you call it nobody says is that Bird or Byrd?

How about Brass Machine and Scream Machine?

Our high school played Brass Machine, Middle school played the level 4(?) version, which I had the solo in.
And Scream machine is insane.

And Gonna Fly Now, still trying to get my director to play that in a couple years, when i've got the range.

Re: New Thread #1: My top jazz tune list... thoughts?

yeah, think swing quartet/quintets... when you look through real books and things as such you get a choice of swing, blues, latin, ballads, waltzes... i reckon you could put some 60's Herbie/Hubbard/Shorter stuff in there, like one finger snap, the sorcerer...

Re: New Thread #1: My top jazz tune list... thoughts?

This thread is a lot of fun, reading the name of a tune and 'hearing' it pop into your head.

It's both remarkable and scary to think of all the tunes we know (and have to know), even if it isn't quite as formidable as this list.

If I Didn't Care. Other than that, basically everything I have in my current list is already on yours (and I need to add some of them to mine for sure).
