Re: New Thread #1: My top jazz tune list... thoughts?

Trent, do you mean you have a folder with these tunes all filed alphabetically?

How many of them have you memorised? I often read that memorising the tunes is a must but it has always seemed like a huge task/amount of time to do so.

Re: New Thread #1: My top jazz tune list... thoughts?

Beautiful list, indeed. But what about "Lonely Woman" by Ornette Coleman-Don Cherry (or the Modern Jazz Quartet, using the vibes played melody transposed for trumpet) ?

I have all the tunes on my hard drives (home computer and laptop). I do have almost all of these tunes internalized (memorized). I'll chat a bit about my "ABC" list next when it comes to learning tunes. It took a while to learn these but it's worth it. I also have a great photographic memory and really good "relative" pitch. I know I have an advantage when it comes to my tune learning/memorization. Someone asked for "What'll I do" on my gig Saturday and I played it for them. I had never played it before but have heard it many times. That felt like I was cheating almost :)

Dupac, I love Lonely Woman but never find myself playing it on gigs. I should play it more often!

Cheers,

T

Wow! Just wow! That's a lot of tunes! I think that list includes every jazz tune I've ever heard. I don't know how you would even begin to keep them organized.
BTW, I Remember Clifford is one of my favorites. I know you have it up there, I just wanted to put in my thoughts. :)

Re: New Thread #1: My top jazz tune list... thoughts?

Trent -

That's a great list - sort of your own personal jazz fake book!!!

Also a kind of a stump the stars exercise - I'd look at the list and try to think of something to add - and have to say "Nope - he's got that one too!"

Did come up with one fav/classic to add: "These Foolish Things".

Regards,

Bob Good (aka RGood)
